I have chosen to make this a Mothers’ Day card for a young girl soon to be 10 years old as she has asked for a card for her Mother’s Special Day. I am more than delighted with the outcome using her choice of sort of blue and some pink with love hearts. The verse I have included is altered from Janyce Cotterill’s original free verse slightly, as requested by the young girl. I began with a white card cut at 17.5 x 12cm to the design onto and completed all the stitching before I completed any bead attachment. I used all pure cotton threads, in four different shades of aqua and one of deep rose pink. I followed the stitch length recommendations, which has given a perfect result. The beads I have used are all in aqua shades, and I have used 7 pearl finished 0.5mm rice beads, and 4 of these has a tiny glass seed bead attached, however of the 3 central rice beads, only the centre one has 2 of these tiny seed beads attached. I have used 2 round glass 0.5mm faceted beads, and 2 iridescent 0.3mm round beads and at the very base of the butterfly I have 2 kite shaped glass 0.3mm faceted beads. In total I have used 19 beads. I used 2 peel-off silver edged butterflies to stick onto white backing sheets and then colour them in with permanent pens. I wanted the butterflies to carry the message which says MUM in silver on an aqua glitter background, so before I attached these to the topper, I made the backing sheets and the main card. The first backing sheet is pink and is cut at 18x 12.5cm. The second backing sheet is white and is cut at 18x13.5cm. These are both attached using D.S. tape to the white card front. The card front, which was cut at 30x 19.5cm and was then scored and folded, has a 40cm length of aqua satin ribbon attached to the outside left hand side 3mm in from the far left edge, with the tails left long enough to then cover the insert sheet. I made a silver trail with a peel-off strip and attached the happy mothers’ day sentiment. I then placed the butterflies in place using small D.S. padded squares, I made a ribbon rose, and attached it and a glitter finished white heart, both with white glue. I used a glitter silver peel-off strip around the edge of the white backing sheet. I used a, aged look off white backing sheet to print the verse onto and attached this to the same off white backing sheet. I completed the ribbon attachment and added a pink glitter heart with the words MUM attached, using white glue. A beautiful design made into a memorable card. Pamela Horton. The Whispering Platypus.
