Stitching
Photographs from the Community
Emy has given us another one of her wonderful floral designs to stitch, with an addition for the purchaser, to try for them selves.
I made this one successfully, and am still working on the 2 colour background scheme. It is quite challenging. There are no beads on this one, so the single flower and spirals are self explanatory, and very easy to complete.
I chose to use orange and vermillion for the flowers and buds. For these threads, I used polyester sewing threads and a very fine needle. For the swirls I used a vivid dark green polyester thread. After copying the sheet and pricking onto the background sheet 14cm x12.5cm., I had chosen, I then re copied the sheet in a smaller size, and reversed the print out, so that the swirls did not interfere, or overlap, with the original design.
Once all the stitching was completed, I threaded 3 ribbons across the front , each in a slightly different way
I have included a photograph of the measurements, to explain the following.
I first checked where the stitching was, so as not to cut any of the work, and working from the back of the completed sheet.
1. I measured down 1 cm and drew, with a pencil and ruler, a line from left to right across the 12.5 cm width of the backing sheet. Still using this line as a guide, I measured and marked the sheet, starting at the left hand side at
1cm.,0.5cm., 1.5cm., 0.5cm., 1.5cm., 0.5cm.,1.5cm., 0.5cm.,1.5cm., 0.5cm.,1.5cm., 0.5cm., The last 1cm.,makes this measure 12.5cm across the sheet.
To thread the narrow 0.4cm., orange ribbon, I used a craft knife and cut along the line, as shown in the photograph.
The first cut is at the 1cm mark, along a scant, 0.5cm, and up, on either side of this mark, by 0.5cm. This will make a 90 degree angle, U shaped section. Make sure it is cleanly cut and gently fold up the flap towards the top of the backing sheet.
Do not cut this flap off, as I folded it down again over the ribbon.
Continue along to the end of the 12.5cm length
For the second ribbon, a 0.6cm, deep green satin ribbon, The flap area is still the same 0.5cm U shape, but at different horizontal measurements.
I measured down 6.0cm., and drew a horizontal line again on the reverse of the stitching work. This is the line to make the short 0.5 cm cuts to thread the ribbon and keep the flaps intact. It also means that once I had made the U shaped cut the distance between the bottom of the orange ribbon and the top of the threaded green ribbon is 5.5cm.
The measurement for the green ribbon is as follows,
0.5cm.,0.5cm.,10.5cm.,0.5cm., leaving 0.5cm., to the end of the sheet.
I then measured down 5.5 cm on the back of the stitching side, for the next orange ribbon, as follow,
0.5., 0.5cm.,1.5cm.,0.5cm.,2.5cm.,1.5cm.,3.0cm.,0.5cm.,1.0cm.,0.5cm., leaving 0.5 at the end or the sheet.
After threading the ribbons in each row ,I closed down the flap and used double sided tape to hold the flaps down permanently.
I then used an orange backing sheet 14.5 x 13.5cm, I attached to the finished stitched topper with double sided tape,
And used a white backing sheet,15 x 14cm. The main card is a matching green, 29cm x 15.5cm., and is attached using padded tape.
For the insert I hand drew in water colour pencils, a representative of the flower, and, made an insert in the same paper as the card used for the main backing for the stitching. I added a green ribbon down the centre of the insert.
I love working with the stitching cards Emy designs for craftsuprint, and as this is a clever, simple style has quite universal appeal for many occasions, even as a keep sake.
I have added a stitching card with a Christmas theme today. I completed the stitching, as the original sheet provided, and used alcohol pens to do the colouring. I added, silver, peel off, stars, to complement the wishing theme. Credits are given to Clare Walker, for the backing sheet, Poinsettias, A big Hug for you Emy, you can see I have made good use of your design, and shown how much versatility your pattern presents. Thank you.
