A flattering, knitted shrug. Great on a cool summer's evening.
This pattern is for a size 38/40 and seven balls of Barcelona yarn have been used. Gauge: 10cm horizontal = 11 stitches 10cm vertical = 16 rows. Knitting needle No. 7 The shrug is made from a ribbed knitted back and a long piece with cables which form the "fronts" and "collar" on the back.
1: Cast on 46 stitches loosely for the back and knit 54 rows rib (knit 1, purl 1). Cast off loosely. 2: Cast on 38 stitches loosely for the cabled piece. 3: 4 purl, 6 knit, 6 purl, 6 knit, 6 purl, 6 knit, 4 purl. (This is the RS of the knitting). 4: On the wrong side (WS) knit "opposite": 4 knit, 6 purl, 6 knit, 6 purl, 6 knit, 6 purl, 4 knit. 5: Knit 4 more rows in this way. 6: Knit cables with the 6 knit stitches, knitting the 3 rear stitches before knitting the 3 stitches in front. Put the 3 stitches in the front onto a cable needle whilst knitting the 3 rear stitches. 7: Knit one row as described in point 4 and then knit 10 rows as described in point 3 and 4. 8: Knit until there are 14 twists in total. 9: At last knit 5 rows as described in point 4 and 3. Cast off loosely.
1: Put the knitting into water and pull into shape. 2: Sew the ends of the cable knitting to each side of the back and distribute this piece with the cable knitting whilst sewing it onto the back. The stitching is approx. 2cm longer than half of the side of the back. 3: let three twists be "free" for the armhole. The stitching with the upper edge of the back begins at the 4th twist. This applies to each side. NB: the shrug may be closed with at buckle in front.
Barcelona is a gorgeous flam yarn in a mix of 40% wool, 30% acrylic and 30% ramie. Most people are probably familiar with the wool and acrylic. But ramie has been known for centuries and is often mixed with other fibres. It is extracted from plants of the nettle family and is known as China grass. The fibres are fine, long and very lustrous and almost silky. When mixed with wool and acrylic it becomes a beautiful and shiny yarn.
