HURRICAN IAN... by Janice Shehan

Well I made it through this devastating hurricane. However south Florida, USA, was demolished and some cities were actually swept into the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Our little town got some rain and high winds, nothing compared to the south of us. I thank God for his protection and pray for the other areas that were not so fortunate.

She Believed She Could ...

by Janice McFarlane

...So She Did! Last Sunday was the London Marathon, the first one since the end of covid restrictions. My daughter Kayleigh for the last few years has ran several half marathons, and this year she decided to go for the London Marathon, an ambition of hers and at the same time also raising funds for the British Red Cross. She strictly followed the offical London Marathon training guide. She knew she could easily do a half marathon, the work, was stretching that bit further, not only juggling being a childminder, and an active wife and mum, she stuck to her training and eating plan. 4 months of hardwork paid off. She didnt run with friends, she was running on her own, with her husband and two children there to cheer her on. I was able to track her on my phone as she ran as well as watching on tv. I must admit seeing her cross the finish line was very emotional. She smiled all the way round. The official photos proved that and it was widely commented on. At the end Her biggest fans were there to greet her with a poster the boys had made, then a special reception from the Red Cross. I am so proud of her, I know she still hasnt come down off cloud nine yet. The whole experience and atmosphere was amazing. Her motto all the way and during training and even on her running trainers she has a tag - She believe she could, so she did.... and she certainly did!

Its On for 2022 by Vicki Avcin

Each year Bathurst plays host to the greatest car race in the country, The Bathurst 1000. This year 19 Holden Commodores and 9 Ford Mustangs will line up at 11.15am for 161 laps of the famous circuit. It is the battle of the manufacturers each year Ford vs Commodore. As neither brand is no longer manufactured in Australia, most of the cars now are purpose built and imported into the country. The race concept originated with the 1960 Armstrong 500 at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, before being relocated to Bathurst in 1963 and continuing there in every year since. The race is traditionally run on the Labour Day long weekend in New South Wales, in early October.Peter Brock is undisputedly the only King of the Mountain with an unsurpassed 9 wins at the Bathurst 1000. Sadly he passed away in 2006. King of the Mountain and Peter Perfect were his nicknames as he dominated the race over the years. There is now a Peter Brock Trophy which goes to the winner of the event each year. There are two co drivers for each vehicle with designated pit stops where they can change drivers. The weather plays a big part in the race as quite often you can count on rain which means drivers have to change tyres from slicks to wet weather (a call they have to make as to how bad and prolonged the rain will last)There has been some interesting incidents over the years with rabbits, cats, kangaroos crossing the track and big boulders have caused havoc rolling onto the track. Thousands of fans camp out in various campsites around the track for the weekends where each year, over 150 thousand people flock to the country town, three hours west of Sydney. So its a lazy weekend for me as I settle into the lounge and watch the practice runs on Friday and Saturday, the top 10 Shootout (to determine final grid places) on Saturday afternoon and then Sunday is the Great Race.

This weeks designs are both motor vehicle themes

Getting close by Tina Fitch

Just look how close he is on the pan to the F-15 taking off.... I should imagine you can feel the intense heat coming from those afterburners.I have never been that close as yet I so would love to be.Base visit last friday was amazing as usual, Did loads of things even had a talk on the Birds pf prey that keep the jets safe around the airfield on Launch and landing, Was very interesting really what happens and what precautions they take to keep safe. This actual photo was taken from fence view on launching from runway... It was quite chilly on the day but it meant less heat haze from the runway which is good .

Avian Flue by Gail Collins

we have had such turbulent summer by me . I work on a community garden across the road from me, an idea i had two years ago to enhance the lake area across the road from my house , we worked on flower bed got the council to add benches and bins and a picnick bench, people came from all over to see it, to walk, jog, ride bikes walk children and dogs and feed all our lovely Swans and Geese but a month ago disaster struck in the form of Avian flue and from 26 swan we were down to 3 a day ago and half the geese have died too and it is affecting other birds in the Area and there was a dead fox we dont know if that was affected by eating infected birds it has been heart breaking and has spread to other lakes in the area now, .

Bloomin Gorgeous by Amanda Assenbruck

As the La Nina continues this year here in Australia I dont need to do any watering to keep the garden happy (the hoses in the pic are for our gray water which can be used for gardens). Unfortunately this does mean the weeds are also proliferating and are hard to keep under control but my Gazanias are bloomin gorgeous at the moment. I should probably have thinned them out a little while ago but will get to it soon enough and spread the colour to another garden bed.
