A tutorial for Autumn Leaves

Step1. Scan or photocopy the photograph of the leaves attached in Fig.1., onto good quality, white card. I used Crafty Bob's matte 200gsm card. For this card project you will need 2 copies of each leaf.

Reduce or increase the size at this point.

Step 2., Cut them out, keeping 1mm white edging around each leaf.

Step3., For the Brown leaf, I used,

8 x 7mm., round flat 2 hole tan buttons,

1 x 1.5 cm., round flat 2 hole tan button.

The 7mm., buttons, stitch, using a yellow cotton thread, to the main points of the leaf, and one to the throat of the leaf near the stem.

The 1.5 cm., button is stitched to the very centre of the leaf.

On top of each button, you will need to stitch 2 sequins, overlapping, and slightly sided by side,

1 x opaque copper sequin and 1 luminescent gold sequin. Or use a mix of the two by choice.

Next to follow the veins on the leaf, you will need approximately,

50 x gold luminescent gold sequins.

Stitch these on, in a line, following the veins on the leaf. You will need to overlap the edges to gain a continuous line.

Depending on your stitching technique, you may want to complete the back by adding some double sided tape, or some magic tape, before using the leaf for further work.

For the Golden leaf, You will need

4 x flat, 7mm, Flower shaped beads in varying shades of the red from the leaf.

1x flat yellow flower shaped bead

1 x emerald green satin sequin, stitched onto the top of the yellow flower bead.

4 x gold luminescent sequins stitched onto the top of each red flower bead.

35 x gold luminescent sequins, stitched along the veins of the leaf, overlapping, side by side as before.

15 x emerald green luminescent sequins for the green shade of the leaf.

The number of beads indicated above, is enough to suit the following finished leaf size, 9cm x 7cm at the largest points.

You will need to adjust this if your leaf is to be larger.

I used a gold cotton as the stitching thread. The cotton does not twist as much as the polyester. The thread type and colour is optional.

Suggestion for the use of this tutorial.

A large wall plaque with many leaves sewn on. This could be a group project for young people learning craft and involving stitching.

Gift Cards, Halloween projects, School Season Projects, are some of the suggestions for usage.

I hope you are able to use this tutorial.
