Make a WASHABLE, NO SEW, fabric photo frame, for an 8x10" photo, 10x12" overall size, using only supplies and tools from a fabric, quilt, art supply, or craft store!

The frame is tabletop, standing, as well as wall hanging, vertically or horizontally. This frame has an easel strut leg, attached, that you can make easily. There are pockets on the back for removable mat board or cardboard easel back and strut leg boards (pattern included for strut leg board, make a 9x11" board for the removable easel back board). There is a pocket on the front for the photo and its protective sleeve, a clear, acid free, sheet protector page, cut to the size of the photo. You can find the sheet protectors in office supply stores, big box stores, scrapbook stores, art supply stores, craft stores, just make sure that the package is labeled "acid free". The strut leg is connected to the easel back on the bottom right corner with ribbon, placed between the layers. A long, skinny ribbon is thread through 7 u shape holes on 3 (2 panels for paper or vinyl) of the inside panels to make the photo pocket - that's the not so secret trick to these frames, to keep the photo in place! There are holes on the back for hanging the frame horizontally or vertically. And how you make all those holes is with a quality hole puncher OR an embroidery like pair of pointy scissors, which go great for poking then cutting out the holes, strategically placed on the pattern printables.

This frame's sewn fabric photo frame was featured in Sew It Today magazine last year, using Fabric Traditions Fabric Loft chevron fabric, sold in Target. And now, I have the WASHABLE, NO SEW fabric photo frame craft download pattern HERE. Teens, and older kids, with adult supervision, who can handle using an iron, low temp hot glue gun, inkjet printer, and pointy embroidery scissors, along with grown ups, can do this project.

If you have scrap fabric from quilting, clothes that you want to upcycle, or you want to buy really expensive fabric but only want to buy a little, this the project for you! And, it's washable! I've even used special occasion fabric from JoAnn Fabrics (test iron & wash a swatch before using). Just place in a large lingerie bag, use mild detergent (I use Wool Wash, dollar store's version of Wooilite), on the cold, delicate cycle. Air dry standing on a towel.

You can also make thicker paper, like wallpaper, or vinyl / leather frames, if you want. Just print pattern pages 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, & 27 only. Use as a template, then transfer all the lines circle holes, etc. to the paper or vinyl. Then all you have to do is, print the pattern pages, cut away excess, corners, circle holes, etc., fold under seam allowance flaps, connect your panels with ribbon and hot glue, and that's it!

I have a table of contents to follow included. This download is 31 pages, A4 size printable sheets. However, you only have to print pages 14 through 29, 16 pages, for the patterns. And for the fabric frames, you will print the pattern pages 14 through 29 onto Ultrahold, an acid free, iron on, paper back fabric adhesive fusible web interfacing, found at Barnyarns, Hobbycraft, Amazon.co.uk & Amazon, in the US at Michaels, Joann Fabrics, AC Moore, Walmart, & thermowebonline.com - you will want to buy at least 3 yards of it. It is available in 5 yard or 4.6 meter rolls, which yield enough for 2 complete frames for 8x10" photos, because you will need to cut 16 - A4 size or 8 1/2" x 11" pieces from the roll, and one yard give 6 pieces. Its easy to print onto Ultrahold, I have a video tutorial on http://youtube.com/user/fabricatedframesCom on how to print onto Ultrahold, and the manufacturer recommends it. You can print onto the paper backing using your inkjet printer! AND, Ultrahold, by Therm o Web Heat n bond, as well as Heat n Bond Lite, are ACID FREE. You can buy 2 packs, 10 sheets each, of Heat n Bond Lite at Barnyarns or thermowebonline.com, its double paper sided, to run through your inkjet printer. Again, you'll need 16 of the 2 sets of 10 sheet packs to make one frame for an 8x10" photo. Heat n Bond Lite is made for sewing, as well, because they use less adhesive, and it won't gum your sewing machine needle. Ultrahold allows my frames, sewn or no sew, the ability, and gives structure to my frames, it seals the holes, keeps them from fraying, keeps the edges from puckering, and allows the frame to stand up on a table or shelf, with the help of the removable mat board strut leg & easel back boards, that slide out of their pockets, for washability. You can sew the frames, too. If you do, use a thick machine needle, 100/16 or 110/18 weight, and use longer stitch lengths, in combination with the ribbon thread through the holes to make the photo pocket, so all you have to do is sew shut any outer edges, and also the inside picture window edges of the first 2 panels that make the front of the frame. Use pins or clothes pins to secure while sewing.

The washable, no sew, fabric photo frame has a pocket in the front for the slide out photo and protective photo sleeve - an acid free clear sheet protector page cut to the size of the photo, 8x10"! On the back of the frame, you will have 2 pockets, an easel back pocket and strut leg pocket, with slide out, removable easel back and strut leg boards made from mat board, cardboard, or even conservation board from art supply stores' framing department.

Ribbon connects the bottom right corner of the strut leg pocket to the back of the frame, tucked between the bottom corner layers. Another length of ribbon will be thread through 7 hole, that you will poke and cut out after ironing to the fabric, on 3 inside panels, to make the photo pocket. That's the key- the skinny ribbon connects those 3 panels, and keeps the photo in place! You just hot glue the rest of the edges, and panels together on 3 sides, leaving 2 openings on the top, one for the photo pocket and one for the easel back board. You also leave an opening on the angled left side of the strut leg pocket for the slide out strut leg board.
