Do you want to own a cool choker? Follow these steps to have one!

Steps

  1. Cut 20-25 inches of string, depending on how long you want your necklace. (Remember that you will need to allow for tying the string so allow an extra couple of inches for that.) Wire works best with small beads (it is stiffer so it is easier to thread the beads on), plastic works best with large ones.

  2. Gather enough beads to make your necklace, vary the sizes and colours of the beads to make it more interesting.
  3. Take the string and thread the beads on it. You can thread them on randomly, follow a pattern which is repeated or begin at the centre for a symmetrical design. The possibilities are endless!
  4. If you have used plastic string: tie your connectors/clasp to either end of the string to fasten your choker. If you don't have any connectors or clasps you can just tie the string, but you will need to start off with a longer string. Be careful not to have the necklace too tight.
  5. If you have used wire: you will need 2 crimp beads and a set of pliers with a flat surface. Slide a crimp bead onto your necklace, slide on the connector, then bend the wire back through the crimp bead to form a loop, pull the wire to make the loop smaller then squash the crimp bead with the pliers, cut off the wire about an inch from the end and tuck it into the beads so there are no sharp bits. (repeat with the other side)

Tips

  • There are lots of different types of connectors and clasps and it's up to you which type you choose to use.
  • Plastic string is the see-through, stretchy string used in most jewelry beading sets.

Warnings

  • Avoid using fabric string. It can break more easily than plastic string.
  • Wire is stronger than fabric string but should not be used by small children as it can be dangerous if used incorrectly. If this is to be a project for children plastic string MUST be used.
  • Ensure necklace is not tied too tightly

Things You'll Need

  • Enough beads to make your necklace (about 200, though it depends on the size)
  • Necklace string (plastic string is the best)
  • Magnetic jewelry connectors or a metal clasp (unless you are tying your necklace)
