You have just made your first clay pot. To make it even more beautiful on the outside, and water resistant on the inside it just needs glaze. Follow these steps to give your pot the finishing touch it deserves!

Steps

  1. Decide whether you want to use premixed colours or mix your own.
  2. Buy the colours at a specialist pottery store.
  3. Brushtypes 50.jpg
Buy brushes. The set shown in the picture will meet almost any of your needs.
  4. Wipe the pot with a moist, lint-free cloth, both inside and outside, to remove the dust.
  5. Let the pot dry.
  6. Gather your materials:
    • glaze colours
    • brushes
    • sponges.
    • old plates or saucers
  7. Glaze the inside of your pot with a clear glaze. Pour it in, make the glaze "waltz" in the pot until the inside is completely covered.
  8. Pour excess glaze out.
  9. Touch up, if necessary, with a fan brush.
  10. Start glazing the pot on the outside.
  11. Apply the first colour with a flat brush.
    • For the fish in the picture two layers of light blue were used all-over.
  12. Let it dry to avoid mixing.
  13. Apply the second colour using a sponge.
    • Put some glaze on a saucer. Dip a sponge in. Dab the sponge on the rim of the saucer to remove excess glaze (and avoid getting blobs on your work).
  14. Let dry.
  15. Apply the third colour, again with a sponge.
  16. Let dry thoroughly, preferably overnight.
  17. Apply clear glaze with a fan brush.
  18. Let dry.
  19. Fire your pot to the appropriate cone.

Tips

  • To create patterns, you can use latex or wax.
  • Keep an old brush to use with latex. It can never be used for anything else
  • If you're a novice, it might be advisable to use premixed colours and learn to mix later.
  • Always start with the lightest colours and end with the darkest. Light colours "drown" in a dark background.

Warnings

  • Even the tiniest speck of dust can ruin your work!
  • Wear gloves when using latex
  • Work in a well ventilated area
