Sponge painting can be a good alternative to wall paper. It provides a unique pattern that compliments modern design.

Steps

  1. Prepare the room. Cover the floor and any furniture with old sheets or rags so that paint will not drip onto it.
  2. Clean the ceiling. This will make the painting easier to do. Make sure it is not too dusty and it is smooth and flat.
  3. Select a base colour. In general, you will choose a lighter base colour and two or three darker over-layers. The easiest way to get progressively darker shades is to use a mixer colour in a light base paint, such as cream or white.
  4. Paint the background colour on in an even coat. A roller is usually the best way to do this.
  5. Darken your paint a shade or two by mixing in a darker color. Remember to mix well. Dip your sponge into the darker paint. Dab the excess off onto a newspaper pad.
  6. Lightly apply to the wall in a regular pattern. You are dabbing the sponge and paint onto the wall-do not wipe it on. If you do, it will not have the same spongy effect. Continue until the wall is lightly covered. It will be better if you work from the center outwards.
  7. Darken the shade again and repeat until satisfied with the results. Putting darker shades over lighter gives a depth to the pattern.
  8. Let the paint dry for at least 24 hours.

Tips

  • Cover anything you don't want painted.
  • Practice first on an inconspicuous corner.
  • Do not wipe the paint; the smears show no matter what you do.
  • Use a light touch-you can always put more paint on.
  • It is difficult to get close to edges, small bits of sponge help here.
  • This technique will not work on popcorned ceilings, or ceilings with raid bumped on them.
  • Roll slowly to avoid splashing paint.

Warnings

  • Paint drips. When dry, even water based paint is difficult to remove.
  • Use caution when on ladders.

Things You'll Need

  • A natural sponge or one torn into irregular shapes
  • Paint-water-based wall paints work best. Matt finish will blend better than a shiny surface
  • Covers for furniture
  • Roller
  • Paint tray
