Hair tinsel is the hottest trend in Hollywood! Beyoncé embraced the shimmering mylar strands at the 2010 Grammy Music Awards and you can get this look without breaking the bank!

Steps

  1. Purchase salon quality hair tinsel from a reputable retailer. Not all hair tinsel can withstand the heat from curing irons, flat irons, and blow driers so it important to purchase a quality product. If you want a subtle effect choose a color close to your own. If you want a dramatic look, choose a more contrasting color.
  2. Select a strand of hair tinsel and fold it in half creating a small loop.
  3. Decide where you want to put the strand. Tying the hair tinsel slightly off of your part will allow the hair tinsel to be seen while hiding the tiny knot used to tie it in. Select 3 or 4 hairs at your chosen location.
  4. Wrap the hair tinsel loop around the hair and pull the ends of the hair tinsel through the loop (a simple slip knot). Pull the ends of the hair tinsel and the selected hairs so that the knot is tight on the scalp.
  5. Tie the selected hairs and the hair tinsel together using a square knot. Make sure the knot is tight on the scalp.
  6. Tie 3 or 4 more square knots so that the knot is secure and doesn't slide.
  7. Finished.

Tips

  • After your hair tinsel has been properly tied it can be treated as ordinary hair. It can be washed, blow dried, curled, and flat ironed. However, care should be taken when brushing to avoid directly pulling on the knot.
  • When correctly tied and maintained your hair tinsel can last for weeks!
  • If you want to remove your hair tinsel, grasp the knot firmly and slide it out of your hair.
