Sealing wax has been used for centuries as a method of officially sealing messages closed. Envelopes today have their own adhesives, but sealing waxes and seals are a fun way to add pizazz and customization to letters and cards. You can use a craft wax melting pot with wax beads or sticks to create your own sealed messages.

Steps

  1. Plug in the melting pot and wait a few minutes for it to heat up.
  2. Add as many of the wax beads or wax sticks as you would like into the pot.
  3. Remove any wicks from the melted wax with a toothpick.
  4. Use a melting spoon or other heat-resistant ladling device to spoon out your wax onto your project.
  5. Wait for 10-15 seconds, then press your seal firmly into the wax before it hardens.
  6. Lift the seal slowly off the wax. If it comes away and the wax is still quite soft, wait a little longer before pressing the seal down.

Tips

  • You can add more wax at any time, and any leftover wax can be cooled and removed for use at a later time.
  • Lining the pot with foil allows for fast wax removal and/or color change.
  • One full melting spoon will be enough wax to create a complete seal.

Warnings

  • Don't leave the melting pot plugged in unattended.
  • Remember to unplug the pot when finished.
  • Be careful not to burn yourself on the pot or the hot wax.
