How to Make a Jumping Paper Spider

Give this activity to kids and let them make their own jumping spiders under your supervision. They'll love it!

1. Take a square piece of yellow crepe paper (other paper will also do). Crumple a ball of newspaper and place in the middle of the square piece.
   
   
2. Fold the crepe paper from all sides to cover the ball of newspaper and stick with tape. This will be the spider's body.
   
   
3. Keep this aside and take a long strip of orange coloured paper 3 times the width of the spider's body. At the shorter ends of the rectangle strip, cut small slits. This will make the legs of the spider.
   
   
4. Stick the strip of paper that make the legs on the taped side of the body.
   
   
5. Draw a mouth and two eyes on the untaped side of the spider's body. Use felt pens.
   
   
6. Fix an elastic or rubber band at the top of the head with tape to make the spider jump. Catch onto the other end of the elastic band, move your hand up and down, and there you have a jumping spider!
   
   
7. Finished.
   
   

• Take a small measurement of paper to make the spider extra cute.
• Don't let the kids do the taping part if you want the spider to be neat, but if you let your kids do the taping, your spider will have unique characteristics that will be unique to that spider and your child will develop greater motor skills to take on those tougher skills later in life.
• You can change the colour of the paper according to your child's wish.
