Fruit loops are always a treat for children, and no more so than when combined with a fun craft activity that can be eaten when you're sick of it! Kids love the colours, the texture and the taste of this fun craft activity. It is very easy to do and is likely suitable for ages 4 and above (provided your child knows how to chew and swallow small food items easily) and for children who understand that a good treat now and then is fine.

Steps

  1. Measure the elastic around your child's neck. Make sure it is going to be loose and comfortable. Cut the elastic to the length needed.
  2. Have your child sit comfortably at the table following a good hand wash. Put all the fruit loops into a bowl for easy access and show your child how to thread the elastic. Keep your finger on one end to prevent the fruit loops from falling off and to leave enough space for tying the knot.
  3. Have your child continue threading the necklace until it is full of fruit loops. Be sure to leave enough elastic to tie together.
  4. Wear it. Let your child enjoy wearing the necklace. Don't be surprised to see your child nibbling away at it at any time.

Tips

  • Try a loop of flavoured licorice instead of elastic for a totally edible treat!
  • Accompany the craft activity with a reading of a fairytale that involves eating everyday objects, such as licorice trees or gingerbread houses!
  • Recycle the elastic for other projects when the necklace has been eaten.

Warnings

  • All good kid's crafts come with a message; don't forget to follow this one with a good teeth clean!

Things You'll Need

  • Thin elastic, enough to fit around your child's neck comfortably
  • Scissors
  • Fruit loops or similar breakfast cereal shaped like an "O".
