A very cute dog can be made from an empty toilet paper roll. The resulting craft item can be used for a child's toy, for a puppet theater or perhaps you'd like to give it to your cat to play with! It's easy to make and fun too.
Steps
- Find a suitable empty toilet roll. Press the roll flat.
-
Draw cut lines on the roll. It helps to draw the lines for cutting first; mark the cut lines as shown in this image.
- Cut the toilet roll dog shape. Be sure to leave the dog's head to snout area intact; only cut the mouth shape and down past the ears, and the little portion between the ears and eyes (see next image for more visual help).
-
Color the dog in. To make it clear that this is a dog, use your marker. The dog's coloring can be any usual dog color, such as black and white, ginger or golden, beige or brown, etc. You can try spots and patches too. Use the image to guide the coloring areas.
- Stick on googly eyes. These are usually already self-adhering but if not, add with a dollop of glue.
- Draw the tongue on the inside of the roll, in the mouth opening; use bright red for this portion.
- Do a small black dot mark at the end of the face to make the dog's nose.
- Pull the dog features into shape. Ensure that the ears are standing upright and bring the uncut roll base (dog's body) to face downward, for the puppet holding area.
- Bring your dog puppet to life. The dog's head moves by inserting your index finger into the body portion of the roll and up into its head. Do a short rehearsal, then take your dog puppet out for a conversation with a friend.
Tips
- Use your fingers to make the dog's legs. (The video will help you to understand what to do.)
- Try to make other animals using the same method. You can change the ear shapes slightly and use different markings and colors to make other animals such as a cat, horse or monkey.
