Here are some simple instructions on how to make a crocheted bag using only the single crochet and chain stitch.

Steps

  1. Chain the amount of stitches you want the bottom and top width of your bag to be. Between 30 and 60 should be good.
  2. Single crochet back along your chain.
  3. Make a chain every time you get to the end of the row, and then single crochet back along the opposite side. (see sketch)
  4. Single crochet up to the height you want your bag to be.
  5. When you get to the top of the bag, work a chain stitch to begin your strap. Measure the stretched length of your chain to get a comfortable length.
  6. Then, single crochet into the corner. Thicken your chain strap as you did the bag, row by row, until you have a width that is comfortable for you and can hold the weight of what you intend to put into the bag.
  7. If you choose, you can make a flap for your bag. When you're back onto the brim of your bag, single crochet onto one side until you have a flap. If you don't want a flap, end it off after your strap.
