Shawls are very stylish and warm. They're even more special when you make them yourself!
Steps
-
Learn the crochet basics. This would include: chains, slip stitch, single crochet, half-double crochet, double crochet, and triple crochet. Make sure you master all of these before making a shawl.
- Decide what style of shawl you want. Pointed and triangular? Flat and rectangular? This article will show you both.
-
Find or make up a stitch pattern that you like. You could make it all one stitch, like a half-double crochet shawl, or make up a lacy shell pattern. This all depends on your style and skill-level.
- For a triangular shawl: First, make a chain long enough to wrap around yourself. This will be the top, wide edge of the shawl. Crochet along the chain of whatever stitch you are using. When the next row comes, decrease one stitch on each of the ends, this eventually will make your shawl pointed. You will make 2 decreases per row. Stop when your shawl comes to a point. Make one single crochet at the end and tie off.
- For a rectangular shawl: Make a chain long enough to wrap around yourself. This will be the top, wide edge of the shawl. Crochet along the chain of whatever stitch you are using. Keep crocheting your stitch back and forth without increasing or decreasing to make a rectangle shape. Stop when you have you desired length.

Tips
- Add a fringe if you desire.
- Any weight of yarn will work, just use the correct size hook. Use bulky yarn for a cozy, Winter shawl, or a cotton thread, for a Summer accent.
Warnings
- Rest your hands while crocheting so they don't get sore or stiff.
