Need to knit a baby hat with ear flaps? You've come to the right page! This simple hat is super-cute, super-fast and super-easy to make! This hat is for a baby aged between about 9 months and a year. If your baby is younger or older, you can adjust this pattern easily.

Steps

  1. Make sure you know some basic knitting before you begin. You'll need to know:
    • How to cast on
    • Plain/garter/knit stitch
    • Purl
    • How to cast off
    • Any basic sewing stitch
  2. Knit the main part of the head. Cast on 50 stitches. Knit 10 rows of plain stitch. Then knit 40 rows of stockinette/stocking stitch, which is just 1 row plain, 1 row purl, 1 row plain, 1 row purl, and so on. Keep this piece on the needles. Do not cast off right now.
  3. Make the ear flaps. Cast on 15 stitches. Knit 20 rows of plain stitch. cast off. Knit 2 of these. If you prefer, you can do these in stockinette stitch. If you're doing the flaps in stockinette stitch, you will only knit 15 rows.
  4. Sewing needle with thread.jpg
Thread your needle with the wool you used for the hat. Get your head piece, which should still be on the needles. Start weaving the thread through the stitches on the needles i.e. go through 1st stitch, miss 2nd stitch, go through 3rd stitch, miss 4th stitch etc. Go up and down the 60 stitches a few times.
  5. Pink_knitting_in_front_of_pink_sweatshirt.JPG
Take the stitches off the needles, and pull the end of the thread. The top of the hat should pull tight.
  6. Sew the edges of the hat together with a basic stitch.
  7. Sew the ear flaps on. Sew the edges of them just under the hat's edges. Sew them opposite each other.

Tips

  • You can change the pattern if you feel it won't fit your baby.
  • Even if it sounds incorrect, follow the directions for not casting off at the given times. It will turn out right!
  • Experiment with colors-you might like it if the flaps are different to the main part!
  • You can knit this hat without flaps, and it will look just as good!
  • Try experimenting with it! There is no specific method or rules for your hat to turn out great.

Warnings

  • Do not cast off.
  • When sewing the top of the hat, make sure to do it tight and securely, so the hat won't fall apart.
