This is a very basic pattern and any person just beginning to knit can do it. You will need to know your basic stitches: the purl and garter stitch. Although basic, the resulting bunny is delightful and will enthuse you to knit more advanced versions of knitted toys.

Steps

  1. Cast on 28 stitches. This will be the width of the bunny's stomach.
  2. Knit one row, then purl one row creating the stockinette pattern. Continue this pattern until you've made three inches worth of stockinette. Make sure to end with a purl row.
  3. Knit decrease in order to shape the neck. To do this, knit two stitches together throughout the whole row. Purl the next row.
  4. Shape the head by increasing. Increase in the first and last stitch of the row.
  5. Knit decrease once more to close off the head. Cut off about six inches of yarn and insert in a yarn needle. Thread the yarn through the stitches and pull tight.
  6. Sew head and body. Leave an opening. Stuff with toy/pillow stuffing. Sew closed.
  7. Legs and Arms:
    1. Cast on 7 stitches.
    2. Do the stockinette pattern until you've knit 1 1/4 inches. Bind off and fold in half (it doesn't matter what way you fold it.) Sew it together using your yarn needle.
    3. Make four.
    4. Sew legs and arms to body.
  8. Ears:
    1. Cast on 4 stitches.
    2. Knit five rows.
    3. Knit decrease.
    4. Knit one more row.
    5. Knit decrease once more. Cut off three inches of yarn and pull it through the last stitch. Remove any excess yarn.
    6. Make two.
    7. Sew onto top of head.
  9. Using a yarn needle, sew in the eyes and nose with a different color yarn.
  10. Tie a bow around it's neck or make it a scarf. (This step is completely optional.) In order to make a scarf, get pieces of scrap yarn about 8 inches long. Tie them together with yarn, in three different places: the middle, left side, and right side. Fasten onto bunny.

Tips

  • This is approximately 6 inches tall. But if you want him/her bigger, then double the pattern above. For example, if the pattern says to knit 5 rows, knit 10 rows, since 5 multiplied by 2 is 10.
