Although mesh fruit bags are recyclable, it's more environmentally friendly to find a new use for something before you discard it. Orange bags make great scouring pads, and can still be recycled when they eventually fall apart.

Steps

  1. Take several orange bags and cut them open in a spiral shape from top to bottom. The strip should be around 3-4 cm wide.
  2. Cast on around 20 loose stitches onto 4mm needles.
  3. Knit for as long as you would like the pad to be. If you need to attach a new piece of bag to continue knitting, just cut open a new bag and tie it onto the last one. Different colors of bags make for a striped pad.
  4. Cast off when you feel like the pad is big enough, and start your washing up.

Tips

  • Keep the stitches loose. It'll be easier to keep the stitches separate, and the actual knitting will be a lot easier.
  • It can be tricky to start off, because you have to get used to the new material - the needle can poke into the little holes and so on.

Warnings

  • Be careful when wielding scissors, especially with little children.
