Although mesh fruit bags are recyclable, it's more environmentally friendly to find a new use for something before you discard it. Orange bags make great scouring pads, and can still be recycled when they eventually fall apart.
Steps
-
Take several orange bags and cut them open in a spiral shape from top to bottom. The strip should be around 3-4 cm wide.
- Cast on around 20 loose stitches onto 4mm needles.
-
Knit for as long as you would like the pad to be. If you need to attach a new piece of bag to continue knitting, just cut open a new bag and tie it onto the last one. Different colors of bags make for a striped pad.
-
Cast off when you feel like the pad is big enough, and start your washing up.
Tips
- Keep the stitches loose. It'll be easier to keep the stitches separate, and the actual knitting will be a lot easier.
- It can be tricky to start off, because you have to get used to the new material - the needle can poke into the little holes and so on.
Warnings
- Be careful when wielding scissors, especially with little children.
