Traditionally, the way to sew a puff (or biscuit) quilt is by handsewing small pillow-like 'puffs' together. However, this is a very time-consuming task and not everyone enjoys hand-sewing.

Steps

    • Gather your materials. To make a baby quilt size 36"x36", you will need 1/3 yard of each fabric for eight different fabrics. You will also need a yard for a border, one yard for the backing, and one yard for the binding. You will also need about two yards of muslin. Batting: Poly-fill, 1 yard high loft, and 1 yard very low loft.
    • Cut eight 5x5 inch squares of each fabric. Then cut out 64 4.5x4.5 inch squares of muslin. WRONG sides together, sew little puffs out of each different fabric square, one side being your printed fabric and the other muslin. Bunch each side in the center to give it extra puffiness. Stuff each puff with poly-fill and sew shut. Sew all the squares together on your machine, right sides together. For a detailed explanation with pictures, visit www.Honeybearlane.com.
    • Now that you have your puffed center complete, cut four blocks of your border fabric the length of your puffed center plus 10. Cut off the corners at an angle to create a mitered appearance. Cut four blocks of muslin as well and four blocks of high-loft batting. Create four border 'pillows' and sew them onto your puffed center just as you sewed the puffs together. Fold your quilt top diagonally to help sew the mitered corners together. For a more detailed explanation with pictures, visit www.Honeybearlane.com.
    • Cut your low-loft batting and backing a few inches wider than your quilt top. Lay them on top of each other so you have quilt top -> low loft batting -> backing. Pin and sew around the sides. Stitch in the ditch of your border and sew tack bars where the puffs intersect. For more detailed explanation with pictures, visit www.Honeybearlane.com.
    • Bind your quilt and you're done!
