Fabric lasts a lot longer and you can preserve beloved t-shirts, pieces of scrap fabric etc. that you have long treasured in order to make a bookmark that will remind you of these favorite things, as well as being a great way to have a long-lasting book reading companion.

Find fabric big enough to make a bookmark. You might find this from scraps around the house, old clothing that is too worn to continue using and other sources of fabric. Or, if you want to splurge, buy a favorite quarter from the quilt store.

Cut the fabric in 2 pieces of a long rectangular shape to make a bookmark shape. Alternately, you may like to use a different shape and nothing says you can't. The only restriction is the book size that you usually read. Good shapes include fish, hearts, stretching cats etc. Anything elongated is best.

Stitch around the edges of the fabric and sew the two pieces of fabric together. This will not only keep the two pieces of fabric together but will also prevent it from fraying with repeated use.

Decorate it any way you like! Good examples include using buttons, ribbon, more scrap fabric etc. Only remember that the bookmark must be thin enough to let the book shut flat. This may mean only adding thicker decorations such as a tassel, bobble, or charm to the ends that hang out of the book.
