This is an interesting but mindless diversion that can occupy your time while you wait for your date to return from the restroom so you can leave the tip and get to your movie on time after dinner.

Steps

  1. Start with a relatively new, crisp one-dollar bill.
  2. Place the bill portrait side up on a hard surface.
  3. Fold the left edge over until all you can see are the letters O-T-E in the word "NOTE"
  4. Make sure that the edges of the paper align perfectly, then crease the fold sharply with your fingernail.
  5. Lift the folded edge a bit, then fold the right edge of the bill under the folded end until it firmly meets the inside of the first crease.
  6. Again, make sure that the edges of the paper align perfectly, then crease the fold sharply with your fingernail.
  7. Your bill is now folded into exact thirds.

Tips

  • 1. US paper currency creases very sharply, so after you finish your crease, the edge of the crease should feel almost like a single thickness of paper.
  • 2. If you reverse the fold of the bill, there should be almost no difference in the reveal at the creased edge; almost nothing should show beyond the uncreased edge.
  • 3. For a $20 or $5 bill, use the instructions above, but instead use the flat edge in the last "E" of the word "RESERVE."

Warnings

  • This method hasn't been used on any bill other than the $1.
  • This obviously only works on a Federal Reserve Note. If you try this on a Silver Certificate, first, you’ll get very frustrated trying to find an “O” to make the first fold, and second, what the heck are you doing playing around with a Silver Certificate anyway. You should be on your way to your local currency dealer. Sell that sucker, because it’s probably worth quite a bit more than a buck.

Things You'll Need

  • One new, crisp one-dollar Federal Reserve Note.
