The kite base fold or kite fold is a basic fold that can form the beginning of substantial origami pieces. Here is what to do.
Steps
-
Place a square piece of origami paper on a flat surface. A table is ideal to work on.
-
Fold the paper in half, diagonally. This fold should bring together two opposite corners neatly.
-
Unfold the paper again. Rotate it so that the crease you've just made points vertically in front of you, or so that you're looking down on a diamond with a crease down the middle.
-
Fold each of the lower sloping outer edges inward. Make them lie flush with thecrease in the middle. This forms the kite shape.
-
Finished.
Tips
- Always use a flat, smooth surface for folding on. It should be larger than the item being folded.
- Always fold in a direction away from you. This makes folding easier for you.
- Creases should always be firm and sharp for preciseness and neatness.
Warnings
- Don't hurry folding; better folds come from being patient and ensuring accuracy and tidiness.
- When making origami, the first attempt is often no good. Keep trying and you'll soon master each origami object you want to make.
