Learn how to make a vase out of newspaper by following these simple steps below.

Steps

  1. Blow up a balloon until it is medium-sized. Or if you are more advanced you can also use a wire form.
  2. Cut squares out of some newspaper that are a bit bigger than your thumb with some scissors.

Drink your morning coffee and read the paper, and then cut out the newspaper!
  3. Get some glue and pour it into a plate or a small plastic cup.
  4. Use a paintbrush and dip it into the glue.
  5. Papier-mâché the balloon by laying square by square on the balloon and spreading it with glue. Do that until there are no holes.
  6. Papier-mâché one more layer on the balloon so that it is hard.
  7. Wait for it to dry.
  8. When it is dry, trace a circle on the top and on the bottom of the balloon with a marker.
  9. Cut the circles out with a knife.

    Use a knife like this.
  10. Roll a piece of paper and stick it through both holes. To make the vase stand, a little bit of the rolled paper needs to be sticking out on the bottom.
  11. Tape around the paper with some masking tape so the rolled paper will stay in place.
  12. Twist some newspaper so it is shaped like a doughnut and attach it to the top of the vase with some masking tape.
  13. Papier-mâché over the empty spaces and wait until the whole vase is dried.
  14. Paint it with some acrylic paint.
  15. Wait for the paint to dry.
  16. Add some pretty flowers and water into it.*see tips

Tips

  • Put a small glass or plastic container inside the vase to hold the water.
  • Combine history and art to create a "Grecian Urn" using pictures of the beautiful relics. Then paint accordingly. This is an excellent project for ancient studies.
  • If using a thick layer of the papier mâché, it can be sanded lightly once dry.
  • Flour mixed with water can be used instead of glue.
  • A small twist paper soaked in a glue and water mixture may be wrapped around the to the bottom edge to create a sturdy base. Or maybe used anywhere on the papier mâché form for a decorative edging or design.
  • Do double coats of newspapers and paint.
  • Be creative and add your own designs.
